The detection of gravitational waves by LIGO/Virgo allows us to test general relativity and the nature of black holes. If quantum gravity effects prevent the formation of classical black holes, the inspiral-merger-ringdown signal of a compact binary coalescence may be altered in subtle ways, such as the existence of “echoes” in the gravitational waveform after the merger. I will present an introduction to this topic and discuss hypothetical exotic compact objects, their gravitational wave signatures, detection possibilities and caveats.
