Polarized light reveals black hole magnetic fields

Two recent results have refined our understanding of the black hole in the center of the Messier 87 galaxy. First, the release of polarization data have refined the image structure and gives insights into the magnetic field structure which is thought to be crucial to launch jets. Second, many observatories throughout the electromagnetic spectrum  were observing M87* simultaneously with the Event Horizon Telescope giving a comprehensive view of the source at different scales. For more information, see here.

One of the analyses of the polarization data leading to the inferred magnetic field utilizes the THEMIS parameter estimation framework that CP3's researcher Roman Gold is co-developing. For more information, see here
